Q: What do you fund?
A: We can provide adverse costs protection and disbursement funding for people who are seeking access to justice for human rights, democratic freedoms and climate harm litigation in Australia. We prioritise cases that have the potential to create broad systemic change for communities.
Q: What is adverse cost protection?
A: Adverse costs are the costs that can be awarded by the court against you if you lose your case, to pay for the other side’s expenses. (These are costs that you may be ordered to pay on top of paying for your own lawyers in the case.) We can provide adverse cost protection by way of capped indemnity agreements, protecting you from the risk of an adverse costs order.
Q: What are disbursements?
A: Disbursements are the ‘hard’ costs of litigation, which cannot be given pro bono. For example, printing costs, court filing fees, experts’ fees, and the costs of travel to court for plaintiffs and legal teams. We do not fund the fees of your own lawyers.
Q: Can you pay for my lawyers?
A: No. Unfortunately, we do not provide funding for your legal fees. If you are looking for lawyers who can represent you pro bono (for free), we recommend you contact:

Q: Is the information submitted through your website confidential?
Yes. We only ever share information that is on the public record and never share confidential or sensitive information without your consent.
However, in order to assess your application, we will from time-to-time discuss your application with our legal partners and members of the Grata Fund board. We ensure that all such conversations are confidential.
If you would prefer that we not discuss your application with our legal partners, please let us know this in your application.
